Important information: The Mirena® 52mg LNG-IUD has now been licensed for 8 years for contraception.

The United Kingdom Medicines Health Regulatory Authority (MHRA) has approved an extension to the Mirena licence from 5 years to 8 years for contraception.

The Mirena can be prescribed for other conditions, such as heavy menstrual bleeding or for endometrial protection as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). There has not been an extension to the licensed duration of use when being used for the management of heavy menstrual bleeding, or for endometrial protection as part of HRT.

Below is the duration of action for the different conditions:

  • To prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years.
  • Treat Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) for up to 5 years.
  • To be used as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for up to 5 years, as recommended by the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH).

If symptoms do not return after 5 years of use, Mirena can be considered for continued use for up to 8 years for HMB.
